Autumn Show Report 2015

September 13, 2015

 – Secretary’s Report

Venue: Memorial Hall, High Street, Bovingdon

Date: Saturday, 12th September 2015.

With nearly 250 entries from 34 competitors this was another colourful show. The wet August, although challenging for growers, did not deter our exhibitors who provided us with some beautiful entries.

Mike Leon retained the Ernest Wright cup whilst May Parker won the Victory Hall Cup for her carrots. Doug Leslie won the Chrysanthemum Cup for a successive year, and we welcomed returning exhibitor Albert Braithwaite who won the Dahlia Cup. Stephen Rickard was awarded the Outspan Cup for his magnificent gladioli.

Our own Bovingdon Bake Off was won by first time competitor Juliette Kent who beat off stiff competition for the best Carrot Cake thus winning the Horwood Bakery cup.

Mavis Lawrence not only won the Copse Hill Cup for preserves and baking but also the Eva Stone cup for homemade drinks. The Floral Art Bowl was awarded to Angie Page who gained the highest points in this section.

Bovingdon Academy youngsters beat off stiff competition to win the longest runner bean whilst the Sunnyside Trust’s entry of aubergines were much admired.

In addition to prizes and cups awarded in the afternoon the Hanging Basket winners were given their champagne prize. This competition was judged earlier in July. Each year, the Horticultural Society arrange hanging baskets for the High Street shopkeepers. This is funded by Bovingdon Parish Council together with contributions from the shop keepers and the Society. This years’ winners are first, Fyffes the Butchers narrowly beating Pendley Estates, and in third place was the Village Memorial Hall.Autumn Show 2015 - Cup Winners
