CHAIRMAN’S REPORT - 2018

April 1, 2018

With the passing of another year the Society continued with a busy range of activities – Three Shows, Talks, Plant Sale, Summer and Winter Socials.

The Society’s Shows continue to be our major effort and are supported by a strong following of exhibitors who achieve an extremely high standard no matter what the weather throws at them.  We welcomed Gillian Johansson back to join our existing Show Secretaries – Mike Leon and John Walker.  The Show Secretaries’ Reports provide fuller details of each show in a later agenda item.

We held two talks; the first in March was given by Roger Sygrave who expanded our knowledge of “Spring Flowering Bulbs” Roger is a member of the Royal Parks Guild and his talk was well received.  The second talk held in May was given by Jaqueline Aviolet “I am a Tulip- What are You?”, who gave an entertaining presentation on plant names. More people came along in 2018 so that these talks no longer made a loss.  We would welcome any suggestions of topics you would like covered in future talks.

The shop keepers of Bovingdon High Street again purchased hanging baskets which are also funded by the Parish Council and Bovingdon Horticultural Society. On 25th July judging took place by Stafford Salt (a member of the Middlesex Guild of Horticultural Judges) who came over from Iver.  This year's winner Pendley Estates, Second was Churchills Butchers, Third was the Gentlemen's Barber.  The baskets were planted up by Steve Foskett Nurseries of Chipperfield.  The winners were presented with their prizes at the Autumn Show on 8th September.

The Village Gates are maintained by some of our members, but we have had to make some changes.  With Lindsey Coates moving away, Doreen Woods has taken on the Chesham Road Gate as well as the Hempstead Road Gate; Sue Miller takes care of the Green Lane Gate.  Gillian Johansson has in the past looked after the Chipperfield Road Gate, but due to the tree growing out of the planter box and other trees hanging over it, we informed the Parish Council that we can no longer maintain this gate.  We are grateful to these members for their efforts to enhance the Village.

A Summer Social was held on 22nd July and we are very grateful to Caroline and John Walker for again hosting this event.  The Winter Social Evening was on 9th November with skittle providing plenty of friendly competition.  The event raised £231 to help our finances and out of this a donation of £50 was sent to Perennial (Gardeners Royal Benevolent Society).

I must thank Mike Leon for organising the Bulk Order (now taken on by Stephen Rickard) and the Plant Sale; Jill Leon for managing the membership records and the Road Stewards; Doreen Woods for writing our Newsletters and managing talks, outings and the Thompson & Morgan seed order, John Hislam the Treasurer and to Stephen Rickard for maintaining the web site.  Not forgetting our Show Secretaries Mike Leon, Gillian Johansson and John Walker.

All the Committee Members put in a lot of time and effort to keep the Society running and put on the events and we would welcome any of you who would like to help with these tasks.

Finally, to our members, thank you for your support and please encourage your neighbours to join the Society.  As always your suggestions, comments and help are very welcome.
